Warner Home Video have announced the Region 1 DVD release of The Dark Knight on 9th December 2008. The follow-up to Batman Begins, The Dark Knight reunites director Christopher Nolan and star Christian Bale, who reprises the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne in his continuing war on crime. With the help of Lt. Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent, Batman sets out to destroy organized crime in Gotham for good. The triumvirate proves effective, but soon find themselves prey to a rising criminal mastermind known as The Joker, who thrusts Gotham into anarchy and forces Batman closer to crossing the fine line between hero and vigilante. Heath Ledger stars as archvillain The Joker, and Aaron Eckhart plays Dent. Maggie Gyllenhaal joins the cast as Rachel Dawes. Returning from Batman Begins are Gary Oldman as Gordon, Michael Caine as Alfred and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox.

Thought that it'd actually be into next year. Cool though. I'll definately be snatching up this baby.

Okay, seriously: If that is all the extras they put on this damn thing I'll be pissed! You know how much money they made off this movie??? You're telling me they can't give it the 3-disc Ultimate Colletor's Edition or something?? WTF?

Don't worry Katzenbach, WB are gonna milk this baby. Expect the 3-disc Collectors Edition next year followed by dozens of other "special edition" packages.

Yeah, but why do I have to wait until then??? And why milk it? They don't need to make anymore money than they already have!

The first hour of the film felt a little rushed in my opinion, I really thought we would see a Director's Cut or Extended Edition release on DVD. I also expected a good documentary in tribute to Heath Ledger and a look at his overall performance in the movie and his preparation.
I am disappointed by this release because it is one of the best films released in years.
I heard rumours that the film will be re-released in Cinemas in January for the build up to the Oscars, so perhaps after that they will release another version on DVD, or maybe for the 1 year anniversary of the film?
Here's hoping...

Considering 'Batman Begins' only exists at best in a 2-disc version is it really reasonable to be expecting 'The Dark Knight' to be issued as a 3-disc version ?

Uh...ABSOLUTLEY!!! Figuring how much freakin' better this movie is compared to the first one! The first one had a justifiable second disc treatment with plenty of extras. This damn release hardly has HALF of the amount "Begins" had! Also, I agree, you'd think that they would have put a special section in there for Ledger figuring how he pretty much carried and stole the movie! I think this release is an insult to all the people who went back to see this movie a second and/or THIRD time.

Yeah, cos studios always think, "wow, that was a great film, we better make sure it gets a more comprehensive DVD release than [such-and-such similar film] / [it's prequel] / [etc]".
And as someone pointed out on the BD news, we have no idea how long any of these run or exactly what the sections contain. Obviously there's little clearly making-of-y in the current, assumed DVD extras list, but it doesn't mean the stuff off the first BD won't be here too, and that might be a 6-hour making-of epic with a special 3-hour section devoted to Ledger to placate the whiners. (Not very likely, but do you know it doesn't?)

Warner Home Video isn't very kind to re-releases. They're the major studio that doesn't flood the market with brand new editions just six months or a year after the original. 300 and I Am Legend are exceptions. Otherwise, you're supposed to stick with the regular version for five years. And frankly, I prefer this method to the "let's milk this baby to death" that studios such as Fox tend to have.

Given the bar set by Batman Begins, I doubt that we'll see much in the way of extras this time either, but I'll still give it a buy for the great flick.

Isn't it obvious why they don't offer masses of extras on a bumper 3 disk ultimate collectors set of big movies such as this? It's because they will want to maximise their revenues. Give it a while and the aforementioned bumper pack will be released, fans of the movie will double dip, and the studios will make even more money.
Why does this come as a surprise to people?

Updated the list of extras. Gotham Uncovered appears to be the 'Focus Points' from the Blu-ray turned into a documentary.

Yay for the IMAX scenes! Odd that they're not listed on the Blu-ray though, especially as they're, y'know, Beyond HD.

They're incorporated into the main presentation on Blu-ray.
